Animation Workshop Day 1 with Prosenjit
Prosenjit Ganguly held a 5 Day Animation Workshop at Arena Chandigarh from 13-17 June 2010. The students attending the programme were taken through a simplified look into a vital aspect of animation film making- An Animated Performance. A core essential that can breathe life into a simple pencil line. And the lack of it that can turn a well made character into a plastic toy! They tried to understand a few simple things to make sure their films breathe, feel and live before their audience. Each student working on the project brought to life one character for the Movie “RYUN” - A tribute to Ryan Larkins. And while doing this got the principles of animation etched into their beings.

Creating a Basic Rig
The students began with an interactive lecture and slowly proceeded to studying various elements and their behavior. The next day they moved on to create basic rigs. The second afternoon they had started their movie. Now the pressure was mounting. A few students stayed overnight to get their work right. The next day, almost everyone stayed on with the girls taking the lead. On the fourth night again there was a rush to book for the night. And there were students who had not gone home ever since the movie was started. They were dead tired when it ended, but the results were for them to cherish all their life!

Student Travelers share their experiences
Student Travelers share their experiences
A group of students and faculty travelled to be a part of the Chitrakatha experience at National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. The second edition of the Chitrakatha International Student Animation Film Festival was on at NID’s Paladi campus from 29th to 31st October.
The students travelled by train and road to reach there and were able to have a private showing of their stop-motion movie “Galti Kiski”. This helped them learn a lot through the critical analysis of so many sincere artists at Chitrakatha.
The students also expressed their journey through video and sketches capturing the spirit of the event as well as the journey. The journey with a faculty itself is a huge learning, and surely going by their recitals, they were not deprived of this.
On their return, they showcased some interesting movies and even shared their experience of the tour in a form of a small Seminar for the other fellow students.
Parmod Kumar and Puneet Arora, the students witnessed the Festival in Ahmedabad told the students how they felt on meeting “Important” People from the Industry. “Sketching is the key to success in the Animation World. I have realised it late but this is the fact.”Parmod shared. Other student Puneet Arora told the students that “Industry is very different from what we visualise, people there are very practical, they know how to work.”
Manpal Setia, alumnis, National Institute of Design said , “Its really beneficial to visit such seminars and Film festivals. You learn alot and also inspires you to work more. This is the only chance to see movies from all the parts of the world and be updated.” Showcasing the movies which were nominated in the Festival, he also explained the way the movie production is done and also gave some details about the makers of the movie.

The wall mural painting project was started on 24th October and went on for 5 days i.e. 28th October. The Visualizing and painting team consisted of 1 Senior faculty and around 15 students. The team was led by NID trained Manpal and consisted of students from BSc (Animation and Multimedia), AAASP and DAE3D students.
“From a light box to a tree,
from a ninja to the deep sea.
Ravishing Zebra to a flying Turtle,
Birds flying the the red sky..so Subtle!
Walking eye looks so tempting,
Watch the birds transforming.
It looks like a beautiful dream,
Full of colors, cakes and cream.”
Each frame in the mural speaks a different story. Moreover for the students it was really fruitful session of “How to handle Colors?” Many of them tried their hand in coloring a wall for the first time in their life and though it became the difficulty too for some time.
There was a special “Night Squad” which consisted of the faculty and 7 students who used to work the whole night. Chai (tea) really helped the “Night Squad” to stay awake and work. Its always fun to play with so many colours.
The mural measures 44 feet in length and took a couple of manenthus (yes manenthu is bigger than manmonth) to complete. The insomnia made the whole experience transcendental. The end did justify the means and the final result was something that elicits wows from many SCDL student examinees besides being a must visit “attraction” on the campus. Well the number of must visits is going very high now and we need to make a tourist map just in case the visitor loses his way
Cheers !
