User Surveys for Design Decisions

Vineet Raj Kapoor, Chief Mentor, Arena Animation Academy, Chandigarh conducting a Character Research

Vineet Raj Kapoor, Chief Mentor, Arena Animation Academy, Chandigarh conducting a Character Research

Vineet Raj Kapoor, Chief Mentor, with 6-12 year old kids, carrying out a survey of kid’s preferences in Animated Character Design.

An artist is continuously faced with design decisions pertaining to characters, concept design, backgrounds and other animation art. Often, the artist takes a judgment which sounds like a bad creative decision in the hindsight.

Vineet, Chief Mentor, Arena Animation Academy, Chandigarh, extensively advocates direct surveying amongst the user. This may not be a final method for decision which would lie with the animation producer, but, this brings to the animator, first hand information about the user reaction thus allowing them to revisit their designs and create characters that carry the appeal. This takes out some of the uncertainty of design decisions and throws up specific options to the Animation Producer to decide between.

Prosenjit Ganguly holds 5 Day Animation Workshop at Arena Chandigarh

Animation Workshop Day 1

Animation Workshop Day 1 with Prosenjit

Prosenjit Ganguly held a 5 Day Animation Workshop at Arena Chandigarh from 13-17 June 2010. The students attending the programme were taken through a simplified look into a vital aspect of animation film making- An Animated Performance. A core essential that can breathe life into a simple pencil line. And the lack of it that can turn a well made character into a plastic toy! They tried to understand a few simple things to make sure their films breathe, feel and live before their audience. Each student working on the project brought to life one character for the Movie “RYUN” - A tribute to Ryan Larkins. And while doing this got the principles of animation etched into their beings.

Creating a Basic Rig

Creating a Basic Rig

The students began with an interactive lecture and slowly proceeded to studying various elements and their behavior. The next day they moved on to create basic rigs. The second afternoon they had started their movie. Now the pressure was mounting. A few students stayed overnight to get their work right. The next day, almost everyone stayed on with the girls taking the lead. On the fourth night again there was a rush to book for the night. And there were students who had not gone home ever since the movie was started. They were dead tired when it ended, but the results were for them to cherish all their life!

Arena Chandigarh announces Season II for BSc Degree

Arena Chandigarh has declared open admissions for BSc (multimedia and Animation) offered through Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Chennai.

It is taking admission in 2 categories. Students with Classical Animation skills can opt for the special select batch being trained to work on classical animation projects. Theses students would be assessed on their sketching skills (portfolio), personal interview and a creative aptitude test. Those students who pass the test and enrol, would be  trained in classical animation alongside their BSc Degree.

This is a unique proposition in which students with lesser skills have just one batch to take admission in. This is in line with the chandigarh centre management’s vision to give higher inputs in classical animation to a suitable qualified student. The aim is to create a student who is eligible to apply in some of the best studios of the world (those who have entry barriers for students without the classical animation skills).

The Chandigarh Centre has recently won Awards for Academic Excellence for the 3rd time in a row. Similarly, the chandigarh centre also won awards for overall Growth, Billing and Collections for 2009.

A fullday Hotline has been setup for outstation BSc Applicants - they can call +91-9872546753 to discuss their options and get Free career advice. Local candidates can walk in for a Free Career Counselling Session. You can call +91-172-2712812 to take a Free Appointment with the Career Counsellor.
