AAASP and BSc (Animation and Multimedia) Students are vigorously preparing for the Annual Day. Specially important for them is to win since the events are also pitted as a AAASP vs BSc competition. Students can be seen preparing in the students lounge during whatever off time they can get. Especially the preparation of group events is taking it’s toll on their patience as they grapple with Late-Lateefs and slowly grasp the nuances of man management and hone their organizational skills.
An Annual Day is a very important phase of learning the role of authority and responsibility. A student must participate in the events whether backstage or on-stage to learn various aspects of these important life skills. It is well known that 50% (if not more) importance is attached to a person’s personal skills or life skills as is given to their professional skills. For a career in Academics it is much more important that this.

Student Travelers share their experiences
Student Travelers share their experiences
A group of students and faculty travelled to be a part of the Chitrakatha experience at National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. The second edition of the Chitrakatha International Student Animation Film Festival was on at NID’s Paladi campus from 29th to 31st October.
The students travelled by train and road to reach there and were able to have a private showing of their stop-motion movie “Galti Kiski”. This helped them learn a lot through the critical analysis of so many sincere artists at Chitrakatha.
The students also expressed their journey through video and sketches capturing the spirit of the event as well as the journey. The journey with a faculty itself is a huge learning, and surely going by their recitals, they were not deprived of this.
- Student Travelers share their experiences
- More students listen on
On their return, they showcased some interesting movies and even shared their experience of the tour in a form of a small Seminar for the other fellow students.
Parmod Kumar and Puneet Arora, the students witnessed the Festival in Ahmedabad told the students how they felt on meeting “Important” People from the Industry. “Sketching is the key to success in the Animation World. I have realised it late but this is the fact.”Parmod shared. Other student Puneet Arora told the students that “Industry is very different from what we visualise, people there are very practical, they know how to work.”
Manpal Setia, alumnis, National Institute of Design said , “Its really beneficial to visit such seminars and Film festivals. You learn alot and also inspires you to work more. This is the only chance to see movies from all the parts of the world and be updated.” Showcasing the movies which were nominated in the Festival, he also explained the way the movie production is done and also gave some details about the makers of the movie.
- the 44 feet mural installation at Arena Chandigarh
- the left brained
- the right brained
The wall mural painting project was started on 24th October and went on for 5 days i.e. 28th October. The Visualizing and painting team consisted of 1 Senior faculty and around 15 students. The team was led by NID trained Manpal and consisted of students from BSc (Animation and Multimedia), AAASP and DAE3D students.
“From a light box to a tree,
from a ninja to the deep sea.
Ravishing Zebra to a flying Turtle,
Birds flying the the red sky..so Subtle!
Walking eye looks so tempting,
Watch the birds transforming.
It looks like a beautiful dream,
Full of colors, cakes and cream.”
Each frame in the mural speaks a different story. Moreover for the students it was really fruitful session of “How to handle Colors?” Many of them tried their hand in coloring a wall for the first time in their life and though it became the difficulty too for some time.
There was a special “Night Squad” which consisted of the faculty and 7 students who used to work the whole night. Chai (tea) really helped the “Night Squad” to stay awake and work. Its always fun to play with so many colours.
The mural measures 44 feet in length and took a couple of manenthus (yes manenthu is bigger than manmonth) to complete. The insomnia made the whole experience transcendental. The end did justify the means and the final result was something that elicits wows from many SCDL student examinees besides being a must visit “attraction” on the campus. Well the number of must visits is going very high now and we need to make a tourist map just in case the visitor loses his way
Cheers !

An Animator is the 2nd happiest person on earth!
A survey done by leading website animationmentor. com showed 59% of professional animators enjoy their work and are proud of what they do. Because animation, as a profession, is a small and specialized niche, it didn’t show up on the “Job Satisfaction in America” University of Chicago survey. According to their findings, the occupation with the happiest people was the clergy with 67.2% as “very happy”, followed by firefighters with 57.2%. AM independent survey would have placed animators right between the two as the second happiest occupation with 59%.
Says, Neelu Kapoor, Centre Head, Arena Animation Academy, Chandigarh, “This is a profession which pays you for doing what you anyway love to do. No wonder Engineers are nowhere on the list of happiest people.”
In 2007, Paramount Pictures’ blockbuster Shrek the Third seized the box office crown with a dazzling debut of an estimated $122 million. More than half of the top 20 grossing movies in 2007 were partially or totally animated.
The animation industry, and the entertainment industry in general, has never been healthier. The international box office reached an all-time high of $26.7 billion in 2007.
Earlier in the year, industry analysts were worried about the 2008 outlook which they feared would never live up to last year’s record. But with hit movies such as The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Kung-Fu Panda and Wall-E, 2008 is on track to match or surpass 2007 numbers.

A Priest is the happiest person on earth! What would you like to be?
In addition to the record growth in the animated feature film industry, analysts predict even larger gains in the gaming industry. According to The Hollywood Reporter on June 21, 2007, “By 2011, the worldwide gaming market will be worth $48.9 billion at a compound annual growth rate of 9.1% during the five-year period.” This means more animation work is available and industry jobs are plentiful.
Outsourcing is growing by leaps and bounds worldwide. Recession has only increased the speed with which Organizations are turning to outsourcing. This has accelerated the rate at which animators are required in India. The economics of the industry made it feasible for Asia to feed the cartoon world, to the extent that today, about 90% of all American television animation is produced in Asia. However, some of the top studios are very selective and would go for an animator with both 2d and 3d skills.
India’s animation, gaming and visual FX industry grew by almost 27% in 2007. The Indian animation industry in 2007 was estimated at USD 0.31 billion and is expected to grow at CAGR 24% to reach USD 0.94 billion by 2012. (Source:Ficci-PwC Entertainment and Media report 2008)
Although 3D tools and technology will continue to evolve allowing animators to take more risks, many professionals see a return to traditional 2D animation as a future trend. Others see a onvergence of the two art forms as 2D and 3D are used together, borrowing techniques and ideas from one another in order to push the art form even further.
Many foresee a return to more 2D animation as audiences experience “viewer fatigue” caused by overuse of CG tricks and effects. They were encouraged to see 2D making a comeback with films like Sony Pictures’ Persepolis and Paprika, as well as Walt Disney’s soon to be released Princess and the Frog.
The income outlook for animators is bright. Average animator earnings are higher than the mean earned by U.S. workers, and there remain excellent opportunities for career development and earnings growth. However, according to a survey, most animators were more motivated by fun and creative expression than they were by money.
Vineet Raj Kapoor, Academics Head, Arena Chandigarh says, “Arena Chandigarh is now offering BSc in Multimedia and Animation, giving you total spread of the entire design spectrum. This allows you to get an opportunity to specialize in the subject that you develop interest in at a Masters Level. Or you can go ahead and get that through experience in the Industry. Even our own Animation Studio has done high level projects in Cell and 3D Animation for International Clients. These projects featured our students work as well, allowing them to get international exposure even before they stepped out for a job.” Hurry guys the last date for BSc (multimedia and animation) Enrollment is 23 July 2009, and already 40 seats are gone!
Arena Animation Academy sponsored the 7th IAD (International Animation Day) Function with ASIFA, Picasso and Frameboxx on 14 November, 2008 at the English Auditorium at Panjab University.
The event premiered select animation movies from around the world, and provided essential training sessions in “acting for animation” by Paresh Parekh, “sketching for animation” by Sushree Sunita Das, and “clay modeling” by Ganesha.
Students from all animation institutes took part in the workshop and contest held. Sunny, DAE student of Arena Animation Academy, Sector 17, won the first prize in Clay Modelling, Vivek Bhardwaj, AAASP student of Arena Animation Academy, Sector 17, won the first prize in Sketching competition.
About 150 students and animation aficionados attended the workshop.
Tribune, Dainik Bahskar and Indian Express covered the event besides the Siti Cable Network.
